For parents and supporters

Helping a young driver

Support the young driver with honest declarations, a resilient budget and progressively harder driving experience.

Insurance roles

Separate policyholder, registered keeper, owner, main driver and named-driver facts. They may overlap, but they are not interchangeable labels.

Car budget

Keep an emergency repair allowance after the purchase and test affordability at a higher insurance or maintenance assumption.

Use the cost planner

Telematics boundaries

Understand what the app records, who can see scores and how a passenger’s phone use or shared-car journeys are handled.

Compare black-box features

First-month confidence

Agree a progression from familiar daylight trips to busier roads, poor weather, night driving and motorways.

A useful pre-purchase conversation

  • Who will own, keep and use the car most?
  • What is the maximum monthly cost—not merely the deposit or premium?
  • Which repairs can be funded without borrowing?
  • Does a telematics product fit work, study, night-driving and phone-use patterns?
  • What happens to cover and transport if the car is damaged or off the road?

Keep responsibility with the driver

A parent can help read documents and challenge assumptions, but the young driver should understand the declared facts, excess, restrictions, claims process and running-cost commitment themselves.
